Signal 1.0.1 Released

Signal 1.0.1 has been released, here’s what’s new:

iPhone:

  • Added song rating support
  • Added queuing support
  • Moved volume bar to bottom of subcontrol screen and added volume up/down buttons for easier access

Mac:

  • Artist and title information is now displayed for internet radio stations
  • Fixed: Resolved a crash issue when reading the IP address on some systems

Now that both the Mac and Windows servers can read title information from internet radio stations I can talk about one of my favorite little features in Signal. When the application can’t find album art on your computer it will automatically search for it online. This works out great with internet radio stations – as soon as the server sees new artist and title information it pulls down the album art for it and displays it in your remote’s interface.

Super bad. Love this hard, man. Just gets better & better.

Ok so apparently I am having problems that others don’t seem to be having. My setup is a Macbook Pro with iPhone. After using Signal for an hour now, I have had a few problems.

First problem is a big one, when I hit the music note icon on the iPhone it goes to a screen that says Media Library. The search button does nothing, when I type in an artist or song, nothing happens. I am assuming this is supposed to be the area like in the third screenshot on your website. A place to access your library, playlists etc.

Second When I press the other list icon, it seems that this is directly tied into what type of view you currently have set in iTunes. If you are setup to view Artists A-Z , when you start up Signal then thats how it shows on the iPhone. If you happen to change the view to say Songs (A-Z) then Signla gets confused and if you choose a song it plays a song that was in that POSITION when you started up Signal, therefore it will play a track from a different artist. So my guess is it is not DIRECTLY controlling every aspect of iTunes but rather indexing song titles and positions on startup.

Third- perhaps this should have been first but when I start up signal and sign on to my http:// address nothing at all appears to be available to me until I either a) play a song within iTunes on my computer or b) press play on the blank screen on my iPhone.

I think this product has a lot of potential and it is obviously new so there are bound to be bugs, but as it stands right now, at least in my situation this release is functioning as a Beta release. I have a large iTunes library and the lack of access to my library, playlists, etc. combined with a wonky navigation in the list view does not make this product very useful to me yet. I really love the idea of being able to control my whole iTunes library from anywhere in my house so hopefully these bugs will be worked out soon.

    Thanks, Meltdown

Great program / interface to control my music server. Just what I was looking for to use with my iPhone. Thanks…

This looks amazing. I played with the demo but my main library is on a PC and my Mac hosts the airport for my wholw house audio. What are your plans for shared libraries? Once this is there, I will buy it!!!

  5. Adrian Says:

I purchased the full version and it works well. It would be great if you could also access shared libraries, as I have a mix of machines all sharing.

I’m having the exact same problems as meltdown. The only difference being that I’m on a G4 powerbook and not a macbook pro. I’m a little disapointed because I paid for a full version and it still works like the trial version. I guess I’ve thrown $30 away on worse things before but Im still a little bummed.

  7. Matt Stevens Says:

meltdown, greg: I responded to your support emails, let’s see if we can work the issue out in those threads.

DenverEagle, Adrian: The Windows version of the server does support shared libraries, I will definitely look into adding support for this in the Mac server for the next update.

I baught Siignal 2 weeks ago and it works great on my pc running winXP. Last week i decided to put it on an old laptop i converted to a digital picture frame at my work office. I thought it would be cool if we could all listen and control the music. I installed itunes and signal on the machine, but it doesn’t seem to work. Signal runs and the client connects to it, but the library does not show up. I tried making new playlists, but still nothing. However if I play a song in itunes, the signal client shows a song playing, although i cannot skip ahead to the next. the machine is running the latest version of itunes and Windows 2000. Any thoughts?? Thanks

I really like this software but I’m having trouble getting it to see my genres. Also I wish there was a quicker way to navigate through the music, I have over 10,000 songs in iTunes (although if I could the genre to work that would help).

Any thought of making a .tapp for iPhone Remote? (telekinesis)

Secondly, it would be nice to have a minimize button on the screen that tells you how to access it.

    Thanks,

    How does the Queue work?
I have no clue how to get it started how to add songs to the queue, can i queue playlists or just songs. Please Help.

By the Way. Great Program, My whole house is wired for sound the house is 4,000 sq ft trying to control the sound from one or 2 locations was insane. But you can imagine with this i just pull out my iphone and depending on my mood i can play whatever playlist or artist or album i want any where in the house and with a strong router i can even do it while im outside the home. Brilliant.

Also just so everyone knows i am using 2 apple airport express in order to play both systems in my home at the same time. Friends and Family were amazed.

How does the thing work if you two or more computers with iTunes setup in both

    a) with the computers not networked

    b) with them sharing a wireless network

  13. Jasonian Says:

I also would like to know how the queuing works. I’m on a PC with iPhone.

Now that jailbreaking can be done by pretty much anyone via GUI, it would be incredibly amazing for Signal to be made into a 3rd party app version.

  14. Matt Stevens Says:

Mike M: Can you try this again with the current version and send us an email if it’s still not working for you?

dmo: Could you elaborate a bit on the behavior you see from the media library? Are you saying that it can see your artist and and track information, but doesn’t seem to be processing genres properly?

tedco: I’m thinking of having the Mac server interface minimized to an icon in the menu bar, do you think this would work out better for you?

JB: Proper documentation is coming in the next update, but here’s the rundown on how the queue works:

All music items display a “+” icon on the right side of the screen. Tapping this for group items (artists, albums, etc.) brings up an option to play the collection immediately or add it to the end of the queue. Tapping on the name of the collection will navigate into it as before.

Single tracks also display the “+” icon, but in this case pressing the icon will immediately add the track to the queue and the icon will grey out similar to using the On-The-Go playlist in the iPod application. Tapping on the name of the track will immediately start playing it.

nofixedadderess: As long as the iPhone is on the same network as the computers then Signal should work – all it requires is network connectivity and the address of the computer running the Signal application. If you mean that the two computers are using a point-to-point wireless connection (no hub or router) then I don’t believe it’s possible for the iPhone or any other device to join the network.

Jasonian: There is some experimentation being done with a native app to see how it compares to the web interface. I’ll post an update here if it turns out to have significant improvements over the web version.
